Mr. Engineer, In the Library, With the...

I figure it's about time for an update on what is fast becoming "the library." This little snow bunny is due for hours of reading in said library.

The Engineer took yesterday off, and has thus had TWO days in a row, without the older two children (with the Grands for the weekend), to work.

Progress has been beautiful! and plentiful! And I stand in awe of his talents and abilities!

While The Engineer's been doing his woodworking thing, Little Bit and I have COMPLETELY cleaned out Little Man and Sister's rooms, all their clothing, and all the tubs of "to grow into" clothing. Sweet.

And I love this shot because it is SO our life...The Engineer making coffee, Little Bit with my glasses in hand - petting Scout and saying "daw, DAW, daw!"

Now back to the library...

Here she is several years ago.

And then only a few years ago...what you can't see is that two structural beams were cut, and so the ceiling and the floor above were sloping. It had to be fixed.

So... last winter we tore into it...

You might remember I cried.

The Engineer assured me it would all come together...

eventually.

Would you take a look at how it's coming together!?!?

We concealed the two new structural beams that The Engineer and I installed (more accurately - imagine me on a ladder balancing my end, while suppressing a scream, as I watched The Engineer lift his end...it was tense) with a coffered ceiling...yet to be trimmed out...

The Engineer spent today installing the last of the shelf standards.

Shelf standards are those fancy things that support the shelves. The wooden brackets can be pulled out so the shelves can be moved. Pretty sweet, eh?!

And here's little bit, at the end of the day, being swept off to bed by the best daddy in the world who also happens to be one heck of a carpenter!

  1. Yes, I agree, that is one heck of a carpenter. I am sooooo envious of your bookcases. I want a library! and I want all my books out of storage.

  2. I adore three things:
    1) Engineer's ability to get all this done (WOW!).
    2) Little bit's first photo - holy cow, she's a beauty!
    3) The woven blinds and panel drapes you had hung previously. Tell me, did you go w/ matchstick or regular bamboo blinds? I actually have a project up my sleeve for next weekend involving a similar look. The actual blinds are quite a bit more than the matchstick style. Just curious your thoughts.

LOVE the room!!! Can't wait to see the finished product!!

  7. So GORGEOUS Jenn!!! I think it looked beautiful in the "before" photo...but I understand the need to *deal* with things like saggy ceilings and no support beams?! CRAZY!!

What WONDERFUL work the Engineer is doing...tell him I am impressed. :) Hang in there...it will all come together beautifully. Looking forward to the "big reveal"!

    Love,
    Camille

  9. Wow - what a great room! We've talked and talked about having a library, as our house in littered with books and book shelves that are already 95% full after only 5 years of house occupancy! I'm hoping that Bow Tie Man may get to putting in some new shelves before officially starting his new job in January. Hopefully!

  10. Your baby girl looks STUNNING in that first picture! She is such a lovely little lady.

I called Ken up from his office to see your hubby's handiwork. Tell him that Ken was very impressed and looked at the pictures carefully, admiring his handiwork. I thought your room was beautiful before--can't wait to see the "after" pictures of your library!
